Thank you for making it this far researching Jim as a worthy candidate for Your Company Here. Below you will find a few samples of his creative output from years working online--for himself as well as other Internet businesses.
Please Note: This website portfolio is a work in progress and does not include everything that this web wonderboy can do, but here are a few things you may be interested in knowing about. Enjoy!
The greatest accomplishment of my career (so far) is conceiving of, building, and running a fansite called ComicBookMovie.com. Starting with only a computer and the help of a programmer/business partner, we made it into the #1 entertainment news site in its genre with an extremely active community and over 9 million visitors a month. I was the only writer for the first several years, then we opened it up for volunteers and my role expanded into managing a slew of volunteer writers as Editor-in-Chief—among other things (sales, marketing, community development, public relations, etc). We allowed users to join our unique (at the time) "fansites" program where they were paid for good content, and we invented a first-of-it's-kind troll management system. This is what it looked like when I was running it:
Over the years we've changed our look a few times, and also had some major ad buys where we made specialized skins:
Because ComicBookMovie.com became a big hit, the industry rewarded us with invitations to press junkets and red carpet premieres. Here is a tiny selection of the many movie stars, directors, producers, composers and other creatives I was able to interview.
We were honored to be among the movie critics and reviewers who got their names on many movie trailers and dvd/blu-ray releases. Of course, ComicBookMovie.com was the anchor endorsement for The Avengers Endgame movie--the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Look for yourself!
As an industry “expert,” national and international news organizations would often contact me for quotes in their articles and critiques. While a lot of these article links have been long dead, the below were just a few news outlets where I have been interviewed.
CNN (defunct)
Yahoo! Movies (defunct)
USAtoday (below)
NBC (video defunct)
E! Entertainment News (below)
The Times of India (below)
Note: Quotes highlighted in yellow in articles below.
Besides being the EIC and writing for my own site, I have done some freelance/contract writing/blogging for others. Below is a taste of the kinds of articles I produced for REELZ tv.
On and off, I have been working as an SEO blogger for marketing companies (Boostability, BusinessPromotion, DentalCMO) that build out and maintain websites for clients. Basically, I research various industries in the Dental and Healthcare industries and provide interesting blog topics and search-optimized copy to drive traffic to their websites. Here is how that looks : (Note - A number of these links have also died.)
Gum Disease
Cosmetic Dentistry
Laser Dentistry
Teeth Whitening
Dental Tips for Aging Teeth
Oral Health and Disease
The Truth About Tartar
Dry Mouth
Cracked Tooth Syndrome
Bonding
Malocclusion
Foods That Braces Fear
I’ve also been doing some comic strips for an insurance company website. They wanted to reduce all the legalese into short digestible bits for the types of coverage. Here are a few samples they are using online and have framed in their offices.
My first job out of college, and entry into the world of entertainment genre was working as the Email Marketing Manager at AnotherUniverse.com--an online toy company and comic book mail order catalog business out of Manassas, Virginia They specialized in comics, sci-fi, fantasy and horror. I was in charge of several product newsletters and wrote copy for the catalog. It was right at the end of the dotcom boom and a little over a year after I began work AU was bought out by a bunch of Santa Monica lawyers who wanted to get into genre entertainment. Thus, Fandom.com was born. They bought out the top websites devoted to popular properties and brought them in under the Fandom banner. I would continue creating e-newsletters for each genre and sprinkle in product to sell. Below are a couple e-newsletters that I created and some numbers showing my success.
